Zabriskie Prod est né un soir dans les jardins du musée du quai Branly, illuminés par l’artiste Yann Kersalé. Nous avons parlé esthétique, technologie, images et voyage. Le lieu portant à l’évasion, nous avons évoqué un coin de Californie qui nous a profondément marqués : Zabriskie Point. Il n’y a rien là-bas. C’est un désert ondulé, rocailleux, près des sables de la Death Valley. Un monde d’ailleurs, étrange, bouleversant. On s’y était perdus et… on a marché sur la lune.

Zabriskie Point, c’est aussi et surtout une toile d’Antonioni, peu montrée donc peu vue car elle gênait. Filmée au début des seventies, cette oeuvre subversive dénonce une Amérique perdue et corrompue par des valeurs de production et de consumérisme à outrance. Brûlé sur la place publique avant de devenir un mythe, Zabriskie Point fait exploser (littéralement !) les symboles de notre société quarante ans avant que cela devienne le sujet d’actualité de la planète entière. On appelle ça de l’avant-gardisme…

On a tous besoin de rêves et d’inspiration pour créer avec conviction, pour avancer. Zabriskie Point, le film, Zabriskie Point, le lieu, c’était la référence qu’il nous fallait à tous deux pour fonder Zabriskie Prod. La raison d’exister de notre entreprise n’est pas de produire en masse de la vidéo, ni de la vidéo de masse. Bien au contraire, nous favorisons toujours la qualité à la quantité, l’intégrité du message à diffuser, l’innovation aussi bien dans le fond que dans la forme, la collaboration de proximité avec notre partenaire et non notre client. Car l’expérience nous a prouvé que l’on peut être pro et rigoureux tout en restant créatif et original. Et parfois, un peu subversif dans nos documentaires…

Zabriskie Prod is the outcome of our encounter in the gardens of the Musée du Quai Branly, threshold of the non-western arts in Paris. We talked about esthetics, technology, images and travel.
Inspired by the location’s mysticism, we brought up to our conversation a particular place in the Californian Death Valley that shattered the both of us: Zabriskie Point. There is nothing there. It’s a wavy-shaped desert of rock and sand. A strange and moving world out of nowhere. We got lost there once and… we walked on the moon.

Zabriskie Point is also and above all Italian film director Michelangelo Antonioni’s bold depiction of the American counterculture in the early 70s. This subversive work denounces an America lost and corrupted by its values of excessive production and consumption.
Burned to the ground at the time before it became a cult film years later, Antonioni’s piece blasts (literally!) the symbols of our society forty years ahead of its time. That is what we like to call avant-garde…

We all need to be filled with dreams and inspiration in order to create with conviction and to move forward. Zabriskie Point, the movie, Zabriskie Point the desert, this was our point of convergence to found Zabriskie Prod.
We are not willing to mass produce for a mass audience. At the contrary, we always favor quality to quantity, integrity to soft option, technical and editorial innovation, a close collaboration with whom we’d rather call our partner instead of our client. Experience showed us that we can be professional while being creative and original. And sometimes, a little subversive in our documentaries…
